If you enjoy The 1% Club, you will enjoy logic puzzles: questions that look simple but need you to stop and think. Here are three to try, an explanation of why they trip people up, and games that train the same skills.

Can you answer these 1% Club-style questions?

These are classic reasoning questions, written in the style of the show but not taken from it. Cover the answers below and have a go.

  1. A pen and a notebook cost 110p together. The notebook costs 100p more than the pen. How much is the pen?
  2. What number comes next: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ?
  3. If 5 machines take 5 minutes to make 5 toys, how long would 100 machines take to make 100 toys?

Answers

  1. 5p. If the pen is 5p, the notebook is 105p (100p more), and together they cost 110p. The tempting answer is 10p, but then the notebook would be 110p and the total 120p.
  2. 42. The gaps grow by 2 each time: 4, 6, 8, 10, and next is 12.
  3. 5 minutes. Each machine takes 5 minutes to make one toy, so 100 machines make 100 toys in the same time.

Why do these questions trip people up?

They invite a quick, intuitive answer that feels right but is wrong. The skill is noticing that, slowing down and checking. Many people find this is the hard bit, not the maths.
